In Greek mythology Persephone ate six seeds from a pomegranate and since you can't leave Hades once you consume food from that realm, she was destined to remain in Hades with it's ruler, however her mother, Demeter, grew sad at her daughters absence and plunged the world into a never ending winter. In order to set things right so that the people of the world wouldn't starve, Zeus, King of the Gods, said that Persephone may leave Hades for six months every year to be with her mother, but the other six she was to remain in Hades as the wife of its ruler and be the Queen of the Dead.
